-The Basics-
Name:Maris Edwards
-Nickname/Alias::Lyra
-Age:32 Years. Appears to be in her mid- to late-teens, like when turned into a Chimera
-Gender:Female
-Occupation:Military (Captain). Specializes in street work and undercover work. Stationed in Central.
-Human/Non :Chimera (Human x Crown-of-Thorns Starfish)
-Appearance-
-Hair Color:Medium to Dirty Blonde
-Eye Color:Violet
-Height:5'2"
-Weight:110 pounds
-Distinctions:Tiny, circular scars dotting the outsides of her arms and back
- Character Appearance; Standing at only 5'2 and weighing in at 110 pounds, Maris Edwards is not one of the largest people around. She has an average build, not too heavy and not too light for her size. She has muscle that is not often seen in women her age, and it is not just for show. She is fairly strong, but she is not the quickest person around, nor the most agile. However, nothing about her general appearence could give this away..you'd have to fight her to figure that out.
When not in military uniform, Maris generally wears a red tank top that leaves just a bit of midriff visible from where the shirt ends to the edge of her leather belt and black jeans. The midriff shows nothing in particular, just her rather light-toned skin. Even while not in military uniform, Maris prefers to wear black lace-up combat boots. She dislikes a steel toe, and prefers to leave it with just the leather. The only two noticeable traits on Maris's head are her violet eyes...a very uncommon color by any standards, and her dirty blonde hair. Her hair is about mid-back length, but she often keeps it in a ponytail that leaves the uneven ends poking out in many directions, reaching the base of her neck at the furthest. She lets her bangs frame her face, reaching past her chin on the sides and cutting off at the eyebrow-line elsewhere.
Finally, a hardly distinguishable trait to anyone without perfect eyesight are small scars that dot her arms, hands, and back. The scars are just half a shade darker than her normal skin, and they are from the toxic spines that poke through her skin when she utilizes that part of her chimera ability. She prefers not to, for the small needles (so it feels) poking through her skin all at once can hurt a fair bit.
-Personality-
-Likes:
Physical fighting
Her job
Watching alchemy
Reading
Learning
Training for combat
Undercover work
Street work
-Dislikes:
War
Killing
Being underestimated
General human nature
Ordering others around
Being told she cant do something
-Weaknesses:
Orders to kill- Although its her job, she dislikes killing since she witnessed the true horrors of the Ishbal war.[/i]
Temper- Although the military is normally a place for people to control what they feel, no military could exist without hotheads. If goaded for some time, Lyra's temper is one of the first things to go if she's under stress or degraded.
Seeing Things Through- Especially when it comes to her job, Lyra never likes giving up. In fact, if someone tells her to gives up, she will try two times as hard to complete the job. She has a determination that makes her rivaled by few to finish what they start.
-Strengths:
Chimera ability- When fighting, if shot, stabbed, or if one of her limbs is even lost, it grows back. They grow back relatively quickly. Also, if her shoulders or hip area are damaged, they grow back as well, just not as quickly. However, if any vital organs are damaged, those might not repair at all, resulting in her death. However, the re-generating limbs often sends people for a turn. They can fully grow back in a few seconds in a fight. But the more they re-generate in a day, the slower they get. Also, at the start of a fight, she is able to produce toxic spines through the skin on her arms and back. However, if either of those areas are damaged, the spines will not come back with the re-generated limbs. They will grow back in 24 hours.
Intelligence- She is rather book and street smart, and is not one to tussle with unless you know what you're doing. Otherwise, it could prove very badly for you.
Speed- She is one of the types called "small, agile, and fast". She can move using decent flexibility to avoid hits, and she also is able to run quite quickly.
-Personality:
CHEERFUL/EASY-GOING :: Maris is a naturally kind person. She doesnt know why, it just seems to be right to be kind to people (needless to say this view got seriously warped after the Ishbal War) She is nice to almost anyone she meets (provided they start off on the right foot, or she just likes them in general), and even if they are rude to her, she will try to be nice to them. Maris believes that kindness and peace are traits that could solve the problems and strife of the world. She sometimes flatters others, using small lies to twist the truth around for the better...most often to help boost the self-esteem of some of her comrades and co-workers. Every day she tries to pick out the positives of what she sees and hears more than the negatives, and though she acknowledges this is impossible at times, she will often reflect on something that has made her happy...like a good spar she had, or an excellent lesson. Also, her cheerfulness sometimes gears her into poking fun at people just for their reactions. Even if it seems to piss them off, she'll most likely continue the playful taunts.[/i]
CALM/PATIENT :: Marismaintains a calm and professional manner, and seems to always be focused more on achieving the best solution rather than just "getting the job done" as other students seem to do. She knows that if you do it right the first time, you wont have to do it again. Maris can be calm to an extent where some consider it 'abnormal'. Because of how long she is willing to wait, some of her advisors and co-workers chide her a bit at how her patience seems to be unlimited, even with the smallest, most annoying issues. To this, she can only grin. She doesnt know exactly why she is so unnerved by people with annoying or pointless arguments, or those that are outright rash in their actions...people who would give anyone else a giant headache. While she is working she is all business..no sense of humor, no time seems good to kick back, nothing...just the smile that stays glued on her face. Also, if practicing combat, she will use the best of her ability to win.
CONFIDENT & SURE- Outside of her initial feelings towards everyday life without the strife of war, Maris has great self-control. In battle, she is able to stay relatively calm in most situations and carefully look at the situation at hand. Maris has excellent instincts, both on the battlefield, on the job, and as a leader. When forced to make difficult decisions on missions, she shows herself able to make a decision through keen observation and analysis. In battle, most of her decisions are based upon what little harm will come to the opponent. Though she will kill if necessary, she would prefer a clean defeat without much damage to the enemy, given the option. She cares for her well being, as does the military. Because of her job in the Ishbal War, she grew a status as someone who could be relied on for the "dirty" jobs as needed. The military would prefer she stay out of trouble as much as possible.
SERIOUS & FOCUSED- Maris, to say the least, is not the most relaxed person around. She will do most any part of hers job willingly...with a few exceptions for her morality. She sees laughter and friendship a sort of minor part of her life, and therefore finds them second-rate on hes "priorities" ladder, with her job and ambitions being first. Just because she doesnt as often as some would like, doesnt mean he is unable to "lighten up".

-Full History: Born and raised in Central, Maris was named for her mother’s grandmother. Her family was middle-class, and her father was in the military. Since she was young, she saw anyone willing to serve Amestris as heroes. She strived to be like those heroes, willing to set anything on the line to at least enroll in the military, then she would take her goals further. After being enrolled in public school for the first seventeen years of her life, she entered the military as a young recruit. She had finally achieved her goal, and soon proved herself an able-bodied physical fighter without much training. She learned quickly, and she already had a stronger build than others her age, giving her more power than she was given at a first look-over.
Two years later, only at age 19, she was shipped off to the Ishbal war…as was her father. Having married late, her parents were in their early sixties when she was only nineteen years old. Her father was in a different batallion than her, and she was assigned to a special “mission”. She and about nineteen other people were selected for this mission, and they were isolated from everyone else…where they were turned into chimeras. Not everybody survived the alchemic transformation, but those that did soon began to realize the potential of their new traits, granted the animal they were merged with. There were crosses with snakes, rams, dogs, wolves, what have you. Everybody was an individual animal, but Maris considered her cross the strangest: a crown of thorns starfish. Many people developed a few traits from their animals, like speed, power, agility, etc. Many combinations.
Maris didn’t gain any superficial traits, she gained some highly useful traits: limb & body regeneration, and toxic spines that regenerated every two days once used or cut away. She could survive in battle if her limbs were blown off, or if other parts of her body that werent as important as organs were cut away. They regenerated slower the more they were cut away, but she suffered little blood loss, and could resume fighting only a minute later after loosing a limb or body part. However, she would not be able to stand blows to major organs like the heart, brain, or liver. Once familiar with their traits, the soldiers followed out with their mission: to carry out assassinations in top-security areas.
They were released once the war was over. Maris was one of the few that survived, and one of three that stayed with the military. She learned her father had died in the months she was training with her new abilities, and she was deeply saddened by the loss, but strives onward today, to live out the dream he had of achieving some of the highest ranks in the military. Years of working hard, serving the Amestris military, and doing anything she can, Maris has worked her way to the rank of Captain, and she specializes in undercover & street work. Her work often requires her to take up an alias, so she has selected the name "Lyra" as her cover name. She responds to it just as well as "Maris" Oftentimes at night, she will gain a reputation among any area she is assigned by attending fight clubs because the Militaries main targets are not the Mary-Sues that abide by all the civilities of day.
Despite her willingness and readiness to fight, since the war, she has been highly opposed to any sort of war or killing. Though she will kill if she has to, she will often elect not to kill someone to finish them, just wound them enough to teach them to stay out of her way.
-Roleplay Sample
:The boy seemed to be taking this incredibly seriously. So he is real about possibly joining the military, eh? Maris thought. Sure, the silence from the boy's end gave Maris a little room to be concerned. She didn’t want to have scared him off, but she was just saying what was true for an organizations such as the military. You truly couldnt be afraid to go for your goals with a fight. The boy's silence did not last long, however, before he started to talk again. His voice seemed to waver a little before it returned to normal.
Baito, the boy, let a small smirk spread across her face and bobbed her head in a small nod after the boy spoke. He said he was given everything that he needed to work with. The boy quickly summarized what Maris had just told him, essentially just spitting information back to the source where it had come from. Good. Maris thought He’s able to do the simplest information gathering. Enough of this noting for now…you’re not even investigating him… she told herself rather sternly. She was meeting this guy for the first time, no reason to take notes on him. He listened as the boy continued.
Of course he knows of father… Maris told herself, restraining a small eye roll. That had come off sort of badly on his part, she thought, thinking back. Oh well, no harm done. Maris couldn’t help but smile as the boy noted how he respected the Colonels, including some she knew of. Nodding once again, Maris paid no mind to the boys expression as he chewed another sweet before he responded. ”The higher ups are...good men. They were my role models of sorts close to when I first wanted to become a soldier. They're very intelligent…I would never doubt that. ”
Maris paused before she added ”Although, since I'm actually in the military, things are slightly different once you get on the inside. I found the military was the best place for me to go with my…ambitions and want to learn. I have yet to find someplace else where I could use them to my greatest advantage. And now its the best place for me to stay with my...abilities.”
Maris paused as she looked back up at the boy, noticing for the first time the serious expression that seemed to recently drawn itself across the boy's face after he spoke. Raising an eyebrow, Maris said with a small chuckle, ”Didn’t mean to ward you off or anything, just telling you the base requirements to be in the military. You look like you’re having second guesses. Whats on your mind?” she asked, nonchalontly closing in a question.
Anything Else?:-Nupe. Couldnt resist the starfish one. And believe me, Amestris would have access to things from the sea. How else would they get imports, and give diversity to their foods? Seeing as starfish are seafood of sorts, (and I've seen it in sushi, didnt dare try it), I'd bet Xing might have some. XD[/font]
